The Mazda RX-8 - Revived and Refined

Publication: Autocar (p.38) | Publication date: 9 April MAZDA RX-8 First Verdict

Autocar puts the new Mazda RX-8 through its paces in this week’s First Drives column.

The upgraded model boasts a restyled front end and improved interior as well as reworked suspension and a stiffer chassis to sharpen handling and steering response - and Autocar’s view is, ‘it works’.

The RX-8 receives praise for its front-end grip, reduction in body roll and, “smooth, ‘fast’ and free revving” engine. The journalist adds, “It’s an aggressive package which makes for a rumbly, low-speed ride, but it points even better and will hang on longer in corners. The RX-8 is hard to fault on handling.” Autocar’s only regret is that the RX-8’s rotary engine remains basically unchanged.

The final verdict is that the makeover is a, “worthwhile update of a charismatic car” and the RX-8 receives an impressive four out of five stars.
